The cost of living crisis is unbearable for an increasing number of young people from low-income backgrounds. At the Mayor’s Fund for London, we have a suite of impactful programmes that help to safeguard and transform the life chances of 4-24 year olds by supporting them with access to food, education and employment opportunities

    Situation

As an organisation working with children and young people from low -income families across London, we are already seeing the impact of what is now proven to be the worst cost of living crisis in three decades. There has been a surge in demand across our food and activity programmes both during term time and school holiday periods. Parents are choosing between heating their homes or topping up Oyster Cards to travel to work or school, and the costs for learning equipment is out of reach for many families. This is only the beginning. This autumn, and as winter approaches, financial pressures on households will only intensify.

    Solution

We want to expand our partnerships, grow our reach, deliver new campaigns and co-design a range of new interventions. Currently, our Kitchen Social and Take and Make programmes work with community organisations to improve children’s access to food and social activities. Our Count on Us numeracy programme aims to make maths fun & improve confidence, and academic attainment. Our Access Aspiration and Creativity Works careers and employment programmes provide support for 16-24 year olds.
