Darfur used to be green with trees & water. Now the land is parched with families scratching an existence as the Sahara creeps south inexorably. Kids for Kids will plant drought-resistant trees to provide vital shade, fruit, stability & a livelihood for children and their families. Please help!

    Situation

Darfur is at the forefront of global warming with temperatures soaring to over 50 degrees in the summer months. All surface water evaporates by February each year leaving the land parched and scorched. Land that was green with trees and water early last century is now a desert for most of the year. Water is scarce, there is very little shade for children, crops fail, children starve and the Sahara continues to move south, taking life with it? How can families possibly survive in these extremes?

    Solution

We will plant drought-resistant trees for vital shade for children & animals, & community forests in each of our recently adopted villages. Tree roots bind the soil together, create their own microcimates & slow desertification. We plant 14 types of trees, each with biproducts, such as gum arabic, pesticides and citrus fruits that add to people's livelhoods. We have successfully reintroduced the Baobab tree & are planning a Moringa plantation to purify water - clean water at last in Darfur.
