This project will improve access to solar powered healthcare, supporting basic power needs for lighting and energy-enabled medical equipment in four rural clinics which provide healthcare to around 25,000 semi-nomadic Masaai people in Kajiado West, an extremely poor area in Kajiado County in Kenya.

    Situation

Many clinics in Kajiado West are off-grid and in a poor state of repair. They lack lighting which limits healthcare provision to daylight hours, and access to simple energy-enabled equipment, limiting the care they can offer. The energy gap in these clinics, which serve expansive rural populations, increases risks for women during childbirth and contributes to deaths from preventable and treatable diseases, because vaccines and medicines can’t be stored at a low temperature.

    Solution

Working with local government and clinic staff we will install solar energy systems and provide specific energy-enabled equipment, such as refrigerators, in four clinics in urgent need, reaching more than 25,000 people. We will also train clinic staff to manage the systems with local government support, to ensure the systems’ long-term sustainability. And, to ensure the uptake of new services, we will support health awareness-raising activities across the communities in surrounding areas.
