Climate change has led to drought and erratic rainfall, soil erosion, dust and reduced soil fertility, and an increase in crop diseases and pests. Subsistence farmers dependent on rainfall for their crops are particularly vulnerable to widespread malnutrition and hunger, especially amongst children.
By planting trees and teaching about natural reforestation methods on community land such as schools we will improve soil by reducing erosion, improve soil fertility from land cover, improved livelihoods and nutrition from fruit trees, generate income to support vulnerable children and their families and educate our school children. We will also establish community bee hives to both protect the trees from being cut down for firewood and to provide income from honey and beeswax.
Since being involved in the tree planting at our school I know more about the importance of protecting our environment and I look forward to eating some of the fruits soon!
Having these bee hives helps protect our forest - people no longer cut down these trees for firewood as we all benefit from the honey produced.
