UN Women UK is training communities to respond to and prevent sexual harassment and violence, and providing a digital helpline and tool/resource centre. Our project is about making our public spaces safer for women, girls and marginalised people, creating safer spaces for the next generation.

    Situation

In 2021, we shaped a national conversation by releasing data showing that over 7 in 10 women have been sexually harassed, and only 3% of 18-24 year-olds haven’t. Almost 620,000 women were sexually assaulted in 2020. However, while the need for public spaces to be safer for women and girls has been in the news every day, solutions created so far fail to get at the heart of the problem, which is behavioural change for prevention: communities lack the knowledge and tools to create long-term change.

    Solution

Informed by work with >5,000 women and girls, focusing on marginalised groups (Black, LGBTQI+, migrant and young women), and 11 years of world-leading expertise from our global peers, we have designed training on preventing and reporting sexual harassment, safely intervening as a witness, and how not to be part of the problem (focus on men and boys). We will roll this out training to universities and community groups in a ‘train the trainer’ model, supported by a digital hub of tools and advice.
