    Situation

Elong'o is the only primary school within 10km of Osupukiai and neighbouring villages. 300 pupils walk 10-15km daily to get to school; 255 more are on the waiting list. Facilities are not fit for purpose: 8 corrugated iron classrooms, 2 overflowing pit latrines, and no water. Food is scarce and children can go without food. Pupils tell us they love school and see bright futures ahead. The surrounding landscape is very dry and bare.

    Solution

Access to water will be the catalyst for our project. We will install a pipeline from Osupukiai 3km away, where we drilled a solar-powered borehall funded by the 2021 Green Match Fund. As well as providing drinking water and sanitation, this will also be a catalyst for our next stage of school sustainability which includes establishing closed-loop farming and a food forest, installing bio-toilet and sanitation blocks and improving school facilities.
