Situation

Lake Windermere is a nationally important place for wildlife, home to wetlands, aquatic plants, rare fish such as charr and providing vital resting places for overwintering birds. The lake is also a valued space for recreation and relaxation, attracting many visitors each year. However the lake is facing a number of threats, including declining water quality, dwindling reed beds, and threats from invasive species. In the longer term, this will put vitally important habitats and species at risk.

Solution

Our project will deliver a range of community activities with the aim of improving water quality in Windermere, with a particular focus on reducing phosphate levels in the lake. We will deliver a range of activities to increase awareness and knowledge of phosphate pollution, and work with local residents, businesses, lake users and visitors to tackle the issue - for example providing education around septic tank use - in order to improve the health of the lake and its habitats.

  • Windermere is such an amazing place to swim and enjoy the beauty that is the Lake District. We need to protect and look after this very special lake.
