Tender works to prevent domestic and sexual violence in the lives of children and young people. RE:SET - our innovative mentorship programme – empowers a whole school community to prevent abuse and promote healthy relationships. Through Big Give, we hope to offer this programme to two SEND schools.

Situation
2021’s “Everyone’s Invited” highlighted that relationship abuse and sexual violence remain critical issues in young people’s lives. Teenagers with special educational needs (SEN) are twice as likely to be targeted as their non-disabled peers: exacerbated by a severe lack of accessible education to help them enjoy healthy, equal relationships. In 2019, a survey of teachers by the Sex Education Forum revealed that 99% wanted more practical help to support pupils with SEND. We want to change this.
Solution
We have created RE:SET: an innovative mentoring programme for schools involving direct work with young people, staff training, and a bespoke online toolkit full of creative resources and plans which teach about relationships in an accessible way. Tender Mentors support their school to create tailored programmes, policies and practice that are informed by and meet the needs of young people in their school community. This includes helping parents/carers to join these conversations with confidence.
