Domestic abuse is a leading causes of homelessness among women. This project will enable us to support marginalised women in Gateshead at risk of homelessness due to domestic abuse by creating additional capacity for interpreting services and flexible responses to their welfare needs.

    Situation

Our Empower service is the only non-statutory community outreach service for women facing domestic abuse in Gateshead. Covid-19 has had a major impact on our service e.g. an increase in volume and complexity of referrals such as women with additional support needs where English is an additional language and women with multiple support requirements. Interpreting Services are expensive and there are no BAME services for women escaping domestic abuse in Gateshead.

    Solution

We will create a discretionary funding pot for our IDVAs that ensures we can provide access to our service and connect clients with partners in housing, welfare and debt spheres so they can quickly get the help they need. Funds can be drawn down against specific needs and agreed between the IDVA and our Head of Service ensuring vulnerable women are not excluded. E.g. Interpreting services for risk assessments, safety plans and appointments; home security adaptations; safe travel etc.
