SHE (Survivors Helping Each other)

SHE-roes 'lounge' peer support group

We are raising money to contribute to the running of our SHE-roes 'lounge' service. We support adult survivors of childhood sexual abuse and rape. Our SHE-roes lounge offers survivors a safe space to connect, build confidence, improve their health and wellbeing and learn about/process their trauma.

Situation

Sexual violence and the effects of childhood sexual abuse are significant in our area. The trauma of sexual abuse is extremely complex and can result in many issues in adulthood and the need for support services is growing. Many survivors struggle with feeling isolated and battle significant mental health issues. Survivors find it hard to develop healthy relationships and social connections or engage in ordinary activities such as employment, training or feel a part of their community.

Solution

We will bring survivors together in our weekly 'lounge' group where they can meet other survivors. This creates a space for women to build relationships and develop confidence. In addition, we will also deliver self-development courses. We help women learn about the effects of abuse, how to manage emotions, healthy living life skills and moving on and back in to the community. Survivors can only start to process trauma when they understand it and this 2 year service will enable this to happen.

  • The lounges were a fantastic, transformative place both in terms of the incredible support from staff and to meet other people who knew and understood (the trauma I suffered). The courses were informative and helped me make a lot more sense out of my experience.

  • The help, kindness, friendship, time spent with me and around others in our group has helped me become who I am… I’m still on a journey, I'm holding the key along with my counsellor, we will go through it bit by bit and eventually the ache in my chest will disappear.
