    Situation

The pandemic has exacerbated already high levels of pregnancy discrimination and our advice line has been inundated with calls from pregnant women worried about their health and safety at work during the pandemic, loss of income and maternity pay and whether they will have a job to return to after maternity leave. More than 54,000 mothers lose their job each year due to pregnancy discrimination, costing mothers in excess of £76 million annually in lost pay and benefits.

    Solution

Our free legal advice service provides in-depth advice, support and coaching to enable low income and vulnerable women to access their legal rights at work and keep their job and income. We also help women challenge unfair refusals of maternity pay and benefits. Wherever possible, women are supported to self-advocate in order to build confidence to exercise their rights. We train and match peer supporters with women receiving casework support to reduce the stress of legal action.
