    Situation

At Amma, we believe one of the ways we can help tackle disparities in perinatal care is to actively promote the inclusion of underrepresented communities in birth work. We know that for pregnant people and parents, having the continuous support of someone with shared cultural identity or lived experience can be incredibly beneficial—but we also know there are many barriers to accessing training, especially among those who experience inequalities due to race, immigration status, or low-income.

    Solution

We've created the Amma Access Fund: a grant intended to create accessible pathways for underrepresented women to enter birth work. The Access Fund is open to Amma’s clients or volunteers who experience inequalities due to race, immigration status, or low income. Funds will be used to pay course fees or to cover ancillary costs to train as an Amma companion, and can be put towards the cost of childcare, transportation, and interpretation. The aim is to remove any barriers to accessing training.
