This International Women’s Day the Fawcett Society is raising funds for our Equal Play project tackling harmful gender stereotypes. We want to reach a million people with a national conversation and support 5,000 parents to take action on challenging gender stereotypes in their families.

    Situation

Gender stereotypes make women and girls vulnerable, especially those from underrepresented groups. They create barriers to gender equality which start early in life. 60% of parents agree that treating boys and girls differently has negative consequences. Gender stereotypes intersect with stereotypes about race to cause harm, eg assumptions about submissiveness of Muslim girls. 56% of parents and 61% of BAME parents agree they want support to tackle stereotypes - our project will target this need

    Solution

Parents have significant influence on how their children understand acceptable behaviour for girls and women and relate to other differences like race and sexuality. But parents tell us they want more support. We have advice for parents, ranging from using gender-equal language to being a conscientious consumer. Our project will build on this and engage parents with advice on actions and support them with resources, complementing our advocacy in educational and commercial sectors.
