Our Essential Grants Programme supports families who are unable to purchase the basic essentials of life, which are necessary items for their homes or children. This includes buying children's beds and cots, school uniform or perhaps replacing a broken cooker, washing machine, fridge/freezer.

    Situation

One in five children in the South West are living in poverty and in some areas of the region, poverty is even more severe. Many parents and carers find their income does not meet their basic needs such as a working cooker, warm clothes in the winter or a proper bed to sleep in. And then when their circumstances change suddenly, life can become even harder as they have no cushion of savings to fall back on. And many single mothers are fleeing domestic violence leaving with only their children.

    Solution

Since June 1980, we have been providing financial support. A supporting/professional agency, who know the family and their circumstances, completes an application form on behalf of any family of all faiths and none who live in our Diocese, covering Devon, Cornwall and most of Dorset. Our Board considers every application and if approved, funds are not transferred to the applicant, as we purchase the required basic item on their behalf and arrange for the item to be delivered to the family home.
