For many of our ex-offender clients, the inability to cover small financial needs can make it impossible to find a job. We aim to set up a “back to work” hardship fund from which we can make discretionary payments for items such as: first month’s travel pass, mobile top ups, PPE and work wear, etc.

    Situation

Only 17% of prison leavers are in full-time work a year after release. Without work, around 65% of ex-offenders will have committed another crime within 2 years of release, costing the taxpayer c.£18 billion per year, as well as damaging local communities. As well as allowing ex-offenders to rebuild their lives in a positive manner, placing them into paid employment reduces economic hardship for them and their families, and enables them to become role models for their wider communities.

    Solution

We have a specialist understanding of what support an ex-offender needs, both in order to access the jobs market, disclose their conviction to employers, and also to sustain employment in the early months. Equally, we recognise the assistance an employer will need to comfortably navigate a person’s criminal records check and disclosure, and how to appropriately “onboard” this person, giving the best chance of retaining and benefitting from employees with non-traditional backgrounds.
