    Situation

The lack of books (only 10% of children own a book in the area) and a safe place of study for children in rural Western Ethiopia. Limited education opportunities and poor learning outcomes for children further impacted by Covid lockdown Unemployment Rate for young people- 40% in the area meaning the young people do not have the funds to continue their education.

    Solution

Over the past 15 years we have supported the development of 40 school libraries in rural Ethiopian schools. We fund 34 librarians (the govt fund 6). The annual cost of a librarian is £200.This enables 20,000 children to access the libraries a month, the libraries lend 2000 books a month (Figures based on May 2021) and provides employment to 34 young people (60% girls) which we believe is outstanding value for money. The librarians are trained by the project and receive termly monitoring visits.
