Theatre Peckham’s local community are part of the groups currently underrepresented in the creative and cultural industries due to the social and financial barriers they face to artistic training and experiences. The local Peckham community has a large black, Asian & ethnic minority population (45% in 2011). The theatre is situated in the London borough of Southwark where 40% of children are judged to be living in households in poverty.
We will continue to provide a cultural venue for local families & residents to experience outstanding Theatre companies & artists, & see their lived experience creatively reflected. We will nurture the talent, imagination & ambition of local people, promote the wellbeing of our community & break down barriers to the arts to make the sector more representational, in audience and leadership. We promote emerging local creatives who push the boundaries of form to tell stories.
”I went to theatre classes from the age of nine at Theatre Peckham… I loved performing and watching plays there and I just wanted to get involved.”
