Situation
Lack of access to adequate healthcare services in the Simien Mountains impacts 39,500 women who give birth each year - 25% are unplanned. Only a third receive necessary antenatal care. 80% will deliver at home without a midwife. 3,000 babies will be stillborn. 6,000 deliveries will encounter complications, leading to needless deaths of 2,000 newborns and 270 mothers. 275 women will suffer a fistula or prolapse. Less than 1% of women will be screened for cervical cancer.
Solution
We are making a difference by filling critical capability gaps, building capacity and improving the quality of women’s’ healthcare services in the Simien Mountains by operating a remote clinic offering comprehensive women’s healthcare, deploying mobile medical outreach teams to remote communities, providing professional midwifery services at government health centres, mentoring health centres on reproductive healthcare, organising specialised training courses and procuring critical equipment.
