St Matthew's Church Park Hill Croydon needs to replace the roof covering. Since our church was built there have been persistent problems with leaks from the roof. St Matthew's is much more than a church to the local people. It is part of the critical infrastructure of the Park Hill community.

    Situation

Since our church was built there have been persistent problems with leaks from the roof, which is made of aluminium strips. Following studies consultants have concluded that the fixings holding the panels have corroded to the point that the strips could lift off in a storm. The only thing keeping the panels in place is their weight. If the roof fails the damage to the building could make it beyond repair. Currently the roof does not have any insulation and it is a very large area.

    Solution

The church is a modern design, consecrated in 1972, and the roof is a plywood web construction covered with aluminium panels. The plan is to put a thick layer of insulation on the outside of the roof before putting on the new covering. We will also install fixings for solar panels and if we can raise sufficient funds we will also add the solar panels to help off set our fuel costs. Part of the problem of the original build was that not enough care was taken with the detailing.
