StepUp is an incredible programmes. It takes rural subsistence farming families in Northern Uganda, living in near destitution and, over a period of 3 years, takes them to a level of self-sufficiency. Bringing thousands of former refugees out of poverty, changing (and saving) lives forever.

    Situation

The beneficiaries are among the poorest rural communities in northern Uganda. Facing a constant shortage of food, exacerbated by the use of inefficient farming methods, households typically eat only one meal a day. Sickness is ever-present, encouraged by poor nutrition, sanitation and hygiene. Under-5 mortality rates are high (45 per 1,000, compared to 3.5 in UK). Literacy rates are low (60% of men and 40% of women can read). Alcohol abuse and domestic violence by men are common.

    Solution

StepUp tackles the key reasons people are trapped in poverty. Through an intensive training programme, it teaches participants: How to grow their own food more effectively, and sell the excess to pay for other needs. The importance of clean water, sanitation and hygiene. How to maintain a clean and safe home, preventing the spread of disease. The importance of school attendance. How to start a business and save for the future. How to work together as a community, with strong women leaders.
