United Kingdom

We are in the midst of climate and nature emergencies. Since 1970, the UK has seen 41% of species decline, making it one of the most nature-depleted countries in the world. Devon traditionally enjoyed an abundance of rural and coastal wildlife. However, intensive agriculture, fishing, and tourism have led to degraded soils, flooding, pollution, erosion, poor water quality, plastic pollution, and loss of habitat and biodiversity; while many local people have become disconnected from nature.

Devon is the perfect place to test and scale Nature-based Solutions to address the climate and nature emergencies, while enhancing human health and wellbeing. It is one of the largest, least densely populated counties in Britain. With two shores, two moors, and swathes of green space in between, there are an abundance of untapped opportunities to live and work in more harmony with nature. There are also many inspiring grassroots projects and innovations to protect and restore nature in Devon.

  • Everywhere you look there are brilliant people working to create positive environmental change. Small amounts of funding, strategically directed, can supercharge this work.

    — Ben Goldsmith, Co-Founder of DEF and Founder of the Conservation Collective

  • Moor Meadows was thrilled to receive a grant from the DEF which enabled the creation of the online Meadow-Makers’ Forum, the formation of several new meadow groups across Devon, and the opportunity to run a series of successful online webinars.

    — Donna Cox, DEF Grantee and Co-Founder of Moor Meadows

  • DEF is doing an incredible job of discovering pioneering nature regeneration projects. It’s a brilliant way to expand our mission of reconnecting people to nature & their natural human potential, and to kickstart a halo of positive change for a regenerative future.

    — Galahad Clark, DEF Donor and CEO of Vivobarefoot

  • Rockfish donates via the DEF to enable us to pool funds with like-minded donors to leverage our impact. Then we can support even more grassroots projects delivering vital Nature-based Solutions to tackle the climate, plastic and biodiversity crises - in very tangible ways on our doorstep in Devon.
