The Coronavirus pandemic has hit young people hard, affecting mental health, employment opportunities and achievement in school or college. WBAF mentors provide social, emotional and practical support, on a one-to-one basis, so that young people can recover as they identify and achieve their goals.

    Situation

Recent research showed that 67% of young people believe that the pandemic will have a long-term negative effect on their mental health, while the top fear amongst young people (14-18 years old) is the impact of COVID-19 on their education, exams and qualifications. These effects are exacerbated for young people of colour, for whom the rate of unemployment was triple that of white counterparts. Faced with an uncertain future, many young people are struggling to manage stress and anxiety alone.

    Solution

Mentoring works : with regular support for six months from a trained, supervised mentor, by the end of our programme, 82% of participants say they feel confident often or all of the time, three times as many as at the start. When they finish mentoring 85% of our participants say they often or always feel positive about their future, an increase of 30% from when they begin. When they’re feeling positive and confident, young people can set goals, build resilience, and achieve their ambitions.
