In rural India, girls, as young as 8, miss out on an education and end up spending 1/3 of their lives fetching water. Walking for miles every day, carrying loaded water pots weighing 12kg or more on their heads. We can help by providing year-round drinking water at home.

    Situation

A life without water or sanitation means no choice, no education, no future. In rural areas, women and girls are open to abuse as they fetch water. Families in the areas that we work in have no access to piped water. They typically rely on wells for their drinking water, which is often contaminated, unlike rainwater. Pumping water out of the ground is not environmentally sustainable When water is pumped out faster than it is replenished the well becomes dry.

    Solution

At WaterHarvest, we work with families to build rainwater harvesting structures which catch and store the rainwater. When it rains, the water runs into the gutter, through a down pipe and into an underground storage tank. This water can then be used by the family throughout the year. A filter is also provided to further improve the quality of the rainwater. This system uses only locally available materials and skills meaning that it is easy to fix, maintain and replicate. A tank lasts 25 years.
