Life is tough for Zambia's orphaned and vulnerable children. An education can free them from poverty but COVID-19 has closed schools and left more children hungry, socially isolated and with poor mental health. This appeal is shining a light on the multiple challenges these children are facing.

Situation
No community has been spared the brutal economic and social impact for COVID-19. Even before the pandemic many Zambian communities were struggling due to soaring inflation putting basic goods beyond their reach. Orphans and vulnerable children who were at risk of malnutrition and exploitation before COVID-19 have paid the highest price. Children, particularly girls, have missed out on learning time in school and absenteeism has increased when schools have been able to reopen.
Solution
Our five grassroots partners will assist orphans and vulnerable children to participate in education, learning skills that will allow them to break free from poverty. School meals will reduce hunger and food supplements will assist them and their families during school closures. Heath education will be promoted and girls taught to make their own sanitary pads - improving their attendance. Counselling, mentoring and monitoring will reduce social isolation and anxiety whilst boosting wellbeing.
