Our Social Development activities address shortages of out-of-school and post-college activities for young people with autism and/or learning disabilities in North London, as well as their desire to mix with a wider peer group, and the support they need to adjust to new "normalities" after lockdown.

    Situation

Isolation and lack of opportunities. Our holiday projects, weekend and evening clubs address shortages of out-of-school and post-college activities for young people with autism /learning disabilities wishing to mix with a wider peer group. To help overcome isolation, stay healthy and learn skills they need additional support and specialised activities that take into account their special needs. By accessing such activities their self-esteem, confidence and social skills are greatly enhanced.

    Solution

Our activities during holidays and term-time weekends and evenings link disabled participants with volunteers (close in age to them wherever possible) who help them actively participate in creative activities (music, drama, art, dance) and healthy living activities like yoga, healthy cooking, choir and football. We are doing most of these in person, but some zoom sessions continue by popular demand. The trained volunteers provide the wider peer-group interaction on which the participants thrive.
