We are rewilding the Scottish Highlands by restoring vital habitat and creating new opportunities for people to access wild places and learn about the natural environment. Our vision is of a healthy biodiverse landscape that can store greater amounts of CO2 and provide livelihoods for more people.

    Situation

The Scottish Highlands were once covered by the Caledonian Forest, a richly biodiverse habitat that has now all but disappeared. Centuries of overgrazing have stripped the hills and glens leaving only small, disconnected fragments of a once magnificent forest. Without a forest and all its abundance to sustain them, wildlife populations have plummeted and some species have been lost altogether. Over the centuries livelihoods have also declined meaning fewer opportunities for communities to grow.

    Solution

We are building a Rewilding Centre at Dundreggan, our ten thousand acre estate in Glenmoriston. Scheduled to open in 2022, the centre will enable us to welcome a larger, more diverse audience making the estate a place where people will come to discover a landscape being restored to its full potential and learn about the processes and benefits of rewilding: creating healthy biodiverse habitat, increasing the landscape’s capacity to store atmospheric carbon and boosting the local economy.
