We want people to join us to transform young people's lives. We do this through values-driven physical education, street dance, mentoring and community KICK Academies to impact a sense of hopelessness. Due to our success, we plan to expand our work nationally.

    Situation

The work of KICK seeks to tackle the sense of hopelessness seen in many young people as a third of young people (aged 15) identify with a mental health condition. Current research shows that this is increasing further due to the covid-19 pandemic. Barnardo’s research showed that one in three children and young people reported a rise in mental health and wellbeing issues with 45% of 16-18-year-olds reporting they felt more anxious (‘The Big Barnardos’ Conversation’, May 2020).

    Solution

In five years, KICK has quintupled in size to engage more than 12,687 beneficiaries a week across 70 schools and 27 KICK Academies across London. We have scaled from seven staff to 62 professional coaches, grown from £225k turnover to £1.1m, and from six boroughs to 28 in five years. However, we want to expand to five new regions and to do so will incur some start-up costs.
