The Covid pandemic has impacted wildlife protection in Zambia with funding losses and a significant rise in bushmeat hunting. Support is urgently needed to keep anti-poaching patrols active so that they can protect iconic species like elephant from the threat of ivory poachers and snares.

    Situation

Covid has had a drastic impact on wildlife conservation in Zambia. With the collapse of tourism, and wider economy, wildlife authorities and NGOs struggle for funding and the country is now threatened with a poaching crisis. Many people lost their jobs and have no means to provide for their families. This has put greater pressure on natural resources as people do what they can to survive. The Lower Zambezi and South Luangwa areas have seen a huge increases in snaring of wildlife since 2019.

    Solution

Tusk has long-standing partnerships with two impressive Zambian NGOs – Conservation South Luangwa and Conservation Lower Zambezi. Both have similar goals to protect wildlife and habitats, and support local communities. They work closely with the national Wildlife Authority to fund, train and equip wildlife rangers so that they can carry out anti-poaching patrols in wildlife areas. This campaign will support the urgent need to sustain wildlife protection efforts to prevent a poaching crisis.
