There is hardly a more iconic and loved wild bird in the UK than the mute swan, but many of the dangers they face in the wild are human problems. Whether they are tangled in fishing equipment or victims of persecution, they need your help to give them a second chance at life in the wild.

    Situation

Around 40% of swans and other water birds brought into our care are victims of human activity. Their lives are put in danger in many ways, including: - becoming tangled in fishing line or caught on hooks and tackle - lead poisoning from ingesting lead-based (and now banned) lead fishing weights - becoming stranded on roads during difficult weather - persecution and animal cruelty These issues can also cause young swans to be orphaned and require intervention in order to survive in the wild.

    Solution

We are here 365 days a year to rescue, rehabilitate and release injured and orphaned animals. Our volunteer response drivers are on call to attend rescues all over Somerset. Our goal is always to treat and release animals and our expert animal care team work closely with local vets to achieve this. If an animal is too badly injured or its chances of survival in the wild are low, we end their suffering quickly and painlessly. We have successfully released 392 swans back to the wild since 2011.
