We offer adults who can’t read, or struggle with reading, a life-changing opportunity to learn. Volunteer-led groups across the country offer confidential, free, one-to-one coaching. With your support, we can recruit and support more groups to help more people unlock their potential.

    Situation

About 2.4m (7.1%) of adults in England can barely read or can’t read at all. In practical terms, this means that they struggle even to do their food shopping, use cash points, read bus timetables or understand health warnings. Going to the doctor, talking to teachers, filling in forms or engaging with the benefits system can all be overwhelmingly challenging. Finding work - particularly rewarding work - can also be very difficult if you can’t read well.

    Solution

Read Easy encourages people to come forward to ‘have another go’ by providing free, confidential, one-to-one coaching on a flexible basis. Each Read Easy group is set up and managed by affiliated groups of local volunteers with the support of Read Easy UK. All volunteers are provided with high-quality training, handbooks and other information and resources for their roles. There are currently 48 groups around the country with 12 more on the way.
