    Situation

Farming is increasingly less viable as a sustained escape from rural poverty, especially in areas where infrastructure is weak and land sub-division limits agriculture. Freshwater fishing provides livelihoods for over 5 million Kenyans, Malawians and Tanzanians. Over fishing and pollution has devastated the lake fishing industry - climate change droughts and floods have devalued land and livelihoods. Many people living in these communities struggle to lift themselves out of poverty.

    Solution

The Mango Tree supports community-led solutions with education, training and knowledge exchange being at the centre of our approach. We help people gain practical skills, support better access to education for orphans, girls and women, and provide careers support, apprenticeship opportunities and a work experience programme. We also support eco-education, land-based livelihoods, community cooperatives and micro-finance savings and loans schemes to build local resilience and fight poverty.
