Frustration and isolation are everyday feelings for people with learning disabilities who have lost skills and opportunities to live their everyday lives post-Covid. Help us rebuild confidence and offer support to get out of the house, into the community, with opportunities to meet up with others

    Situation

Easing of restrictions brought new challenges, as the world works differently now. There are lots of new rules to learn to be out and about safely in the community. Re-learning skills takes months of practice: shopping; using public transport safely; personal safety; talking to people you don’t know. Accessible, inclusive social opportunities are limited. Confidence is fragile: an impatient word from a member of the public derails months of support. It is often easier to choose isolation.

    Solution

We are rebuilding our community support programmes, to include: • Opportunities for people to attend courses to rebuild their skills • Drop–In support groups for ad hoc advice • Providing accessible social activities with support to attend • Welfare Fund to pay for costs of travel, memberships of leisure centres and supported holidays • Volunteer and staff buddies to get out and about again
