Action Tutoring supports disadvantaged pupils across England to reach a meaningful level of academic attainment, using volunteer tutors to help build English and maths subject knowledge, confidence and study skills. We're working with more pupils than ever, and raising vital funds to support them.

    Situation

Education in this country isn't fair, and tutoring is a proven intervention to support academic progress. Disadvantaged pupils are, on average, 18 months behind their peers by the end of secondary school, with 27% of pupils in state education classified as disadvantaged. The Covid-19 pandemic has widened the already large attainment gap, and there's much work to be done to reduce it. Our vision is a world in which no child’s life chances are limited by their socio-economic background.

    Solution

Through targeted maths and English tutoring support, taking place either in-school or through an online classroom, we match pupils with high quality volunteer tutors to build subject knowledge and study skills, alongside key skills such as confidence and growth mindset. Tutors guide pupils through carefully created resources during weekly one hour sessions, with the ultimate view to increasing academic performance and thus opening opportunities both academically and within the working world.
