Nature has been a therapy for so many during the pandemic. Yet many people, particularly those that need nature the most, are too isolated, lonely, or low in self-esteem to appreciate the benefits. Myplace helps people feel connected; with nature, with people and within their community.

    Situation

Mental Health is a huge issue that has increased at an alarming rate throughout the pandemic. We know that people who start to see mental health challenges in their youth are likely to continue to experience problems as adults, and our young people are more anxious and lonelier than ever before. Stress is now so common that ‘burn-out’ has been listed as a recognised disease. And the impact of loneliness is the equivalent of smoking 15 cigarettes a day, and worse than obesity.

    Solution

MyPlace, a partnership between the Lancashire Wildlife Trust and our local NHS Trust, has demonstrated the success of bringing people into contact with nature to support them to build confidence, improve self-resilience and to feel connected with nature, people and their community. With wildlife disappearing at an alarming rate and the anxieties people feel about our climate emergency, MyPlace offers a refuge, a place for positive action, that aligns recovery for both people and nature.
