JMK delivers free training and development opportunities for theatre directors around the UK. During the pandemic we offered free online training through #JMKSpace. We are now planning a mix of in-person and online training bringing together communities of theatremakers/directors around the country.
It ran from 12:00 PM, 30 November 2021 to 12:00 PM, 7 December 2021

With theatres closed nationwide, opportunities to engage with and participate in theatre making have been severely limited. As they reopen, employment and financial pressures present greater barriers to artists from all sorts of backgrounds. At this crucial time we want to engage, inspire and upskill those people whom theatre might otherwise lose.
This project will offer free workshops, mentoring and networking in-person and online to reach people with different support needs in different places. This will enable all those with an interest in working as a theatre director/theatre maker the chance to gain support in developing their career regardless of their individual circumstances, location or socio-economic background. We will draw upon our years of experience of working with directors around the country and our industry networks.
Sometimes directing can feel very lonely (especially in lockdown!) so it was great to check in with people pursuing similar career paths.
As a Disabled director these workshops on Zoom meet access needs so brilliantly. I hope there might be a way to continue them post lockdown. It does not replace being in a room, but sometimes that is hard to manage for Disabled creatives.
It was exactly what I needed right now. I was working at a few of the theatres that had started up again for the holidays and was feeling really low about the closures. Yesterday morning brought some much needed inspiration and creative joy to me so thank you so much for providing this space for us.
