In Malawi, girls and women walk 6km each day to collect water for their family. Often, these pumps do not work. Pump Aid wants to end this wasted opportunity by helping communities maintain and install their own pumps and let girls go to school and build a future instead of collecting water.

    Situation

Malawi is one of the poorest countries in the world. Less than 25% of girls in Malawi complete secondary education, limiting life chances and embedding poverty. Half of females in Malawi are married before they are 18 years old. The burden of water collection and its opportunity cost is a major factor in limiting girls’ opportunity for education. 50% of all community water pumps are broken meaning girls must travel longer distances for water. More time and opportunity lost.

    Solution

Pump Aid supports local water entrepreneurs, many of them women, to repair, maintain and install water pumps. This significantly increases the reliability and convenience of water supplies, freeing up time for girls and allowing them to go to school, complete their education and take a path out of poverty. This approach is practically sustainable because it promotes ownership and incentivises repair and maintenance businesses to keep pumps working.
