Wave encourages more mixed-ability friendships. We make it easy for people with and without learning disabilities to enjoy social activities together – doing things WITH AND NOT FOR each other. This helps overcome fear and anxiety, reduces isolation and builds more inclusive communities.

    Situation

Physical presence in a community doesn't mean people with a learning disability feel integrated or accepted. Studies show that disabled people are less likely to have meaningful connections and be active participants in their community, often due to lack of confidence and prohibitive attitudes. Conversely, while many people without learning disabilities like the idea of mixed-ability socialising, they often don't know how to get started. As a result social isolation and misunderstanding prevail.

    Solution

Drawing on over 12 yrs of experience creating genuinely inclusive community places, Wave provides individuals and organisations with the inspiration and tools they need to establish inclusive, mixed-ability social groups in their own communities. Our practical advice & guidance includes co-creation workshops, engagement strategies & integrating activity ideas to help Changemakers bring people with and without learning disabilities (LD) together in places where everyone's contribution is valued.
