Unintended pregnancies cause stress, stigma, poverty, and often lead to unsafe abortion and injury. Your support will empower women and girls in remote rural areas of Kenya and Uganda to plan their families. We will break down the barriers which prevent access to free and quality family planning.

    Situation

In rural areas, access to contraception can be extremely difficult. Where health centres exist they are often far from home and sometimes poorly stocked. Misinformation about the safety of contraception, as well as spousal oposition can also be key barriers. Without information and access to family planning, unintended pregnancies are common. This causes financial difficulty, teenage pregnancy (leading to school drop-out), poor maternal and infant health, and high rates of unsafe abortion.

    Solution

Since 2012, CHASE Africa has developped strategies for reaching rural communities with information, advice and services. We partner with local organisations who employ Community Health Workers and youth champions to share information about family planning. This is followed by mobile delivery of services via 'Backpack' Nurses going door-to-door, day-clinics in remote areas, and referrals. We also engage men and opinion leaders in discussion groups to ensure they support women and girls' choices.
