People with albinism (PWA) are being marginalised, mutilated and murdered across Africa simply for the colour of their skin. To protect and empower this vulnerable group, Standing Voice delivers projects in health, welfare, education, advocacy and community development.

    Situation

Across Africa, albinism is poorly understood and the subject of various myths and superstitions. 216 people with albinism have been murdered, and 758 attacked, across 29 countries since 2006, with a surge of cases in recent months. Ostracised and hunted because of their skin colour, people with albinism are excluded from services like education and healthcare. The population faces a skin cancer crisis and chronic economic insecurity in addition to the threat of witchcraft-motivated violence.

    Solution

We protect and empower PWA through a range of programmes in health, welfare, education, advocacy and community development. We provide tailored support for survivors of violence; operate clinical networks to treat low vision and prevent skin cancer; relocate children with albinism from segregated institutions to inclusive schools and universities; and rehabilitate hundreds of adults through training and apprenticeships. We amplify the voices of PWA and equip them with the tools to prosper.
