    Situation

    Children & young people (CYP) have shown resilience during Covid. For some, this has had a devastating effect on their mental health leading to admittance to hospital. We are addressing 2 problems: Staff hold basic CYP mental health training but there is uncertainty on how best to engage & support CYP in non-mental health wards following mental health crisis The daunting hospital admittance for CYP following a mental health crisis & fear of discharge (273% increase A&E in the last 12 months)

    Solution

    We will ensure children/young people (CYP) facing mental health crisis are confidently supported by staff, are listened to and feel comfortable. We want to provide: 1. Specific training on how best to support CYP admitted due to a mental health crisis including covid-related issues & light-touch conversation without fear of ‘making it worse’ 2. Bespoke packs for CYP with self-help tools, distractions, support organisations, etc. that aid recovery and prevent re-admittance to hospital.
