Infant Oral Mutilation is the practice of gouging out the teeth of young children as folk medicine. It is done without anaesthetic, by untrained healers, with unsterilised instruments. It is traumatic and damaging and can lead to death We're educating local communities so we can stop this together

    Situation

In East Africa a common folk treatment for stomach upsets and fever in very young children is to take out the canine teeth that are still developing in the gums. Local healers do this using unsterilised instruments, with no anaesthetic. It is very damaging and traumatic, often leading to infection and sometimes death. This 'treatment' is estimated to be carried out on around 2.5 million children every year.

    Solution

Partnering with Global Child Dental Fund, we're working with East African dentists to provide education to key influencers in rural communities to teach them about the dangers of this practice. Developing teeth often produce swelling in gums, this is seen as a symptom of illness and these developing teeth are removed as a supposed cure. Using cascade training we are educating the community about natural development of teeth and hope to be able to stop this terrible thing being done to children.
