Somerset and Avon Rape and Sexual Abuse Support (SARSAS)

Reclaiming Life After Sexual Violence

We’re raising funds to support people affected by sexual violence at any time in their lives. Since the Covid-19 pandemic, we’ve seen a 37% rise in people needing support which means an increase in the length of time someone has to wait to receive the help they need and deserve.

The impact of being raped or sexually abused can be devastating and lifelong. Feeling unable to trust the world around you, relationships can start to fail, potential isn’t realised, and day to day activities become impossible when you can’t stop reliving what happened. This can lead to isolation, depression, anxiety, and even suicide. It doesn’t have to be this way, reclaiming life after sexual violence is hard but it is possible

Taking the first steps to reclaim life after sexual violence takes bravery. Victim-survivors need a safe place to go, to know that they are being listened to by someone who is on their side. SARSAS is that safe place. We go with them on their healing journey. Our passionate team of specialists provide counselling, support and group work to help people reclaim their lives. Nothing can erase sexual violence, but SARSAS can help enormously in the recovery process.

  • Right from the start I felt safe, cared for, supported and heard. I knew I could speak freely and know I would be believed. SARSAS gave me hope and taught me how to begin to deal with my grief, loneliness and shame; which I learned was not mine to own.

  • I'd like to say thank you for everything you have done for me and for all the amazing work that SARSAS does. You keep me going. I can never thank you enough. Because of you I no longer wonder about ending it all

    — Counselling Client

  • I felt understood, cared about, respected and listened to. As I became more confident I became aware of my own power and strength and that I can help myself. SARSAS turned bad days into hopeful ones.

    — Group Therapy Client

  • After I speak to SARSAS, I always come off the phone feeling a lot more hopeful. The very first time I called the helpline I hoped that it would help, that it would be a step forward. It turned out to be a leap forward. Thank you SARSAS for being there, I don’t know what I’d do without you
