Disabled children have been hit hard by Covid-19. The pandemic has heightened the negative effects of cuts to local authority funding and limited access to equal opportunities for our young people. Our families wish for a brighter Christmas this year, help us to give them a sense of normality.

    Situation

Covid-19 has affected us all but disabled children and their families have felt persistently isolated. Lack of access to multiple services from education to health has been detrimental to the mental wellbeing of parents and carers. Despite restrictions easing 3 in 4 disabled children still feel socially isolated. Around 50% of parents have highlighted a halt in vital skills development, such as communicating and interacting with others, putting disabled children’s long-term development at risk.

    Solution

KIDS continues to adapt to changing government guidelines. Where possible we have provided face to face opportunities; with additional restrictions we have maintained support virtually. When other services stopped, we continued to be there for the 13,700 young people we support. Through early learning support, adventure playgrounds, short breaks, wellbeing groups and advice services, our dedicated staff ensure our children’s aspirations can still be reached so no child is left feeling forgotten.
