Situation

After 8 years our building is in need of some major TLC. The main roof leaks and birds have got in and nested this year. The outside space has deteriorated due to age and undermining by wildlife, and the environmental controls and lighting systems were specified before modern environmental planning and need upgrading to reduce energy use and meet visitor needs. We need upgraded storage with safer access to keep our archive safe and enable staff and volunteers to work effectively

Solution

Renewing the roof will safeguard against leaks and protect our collection. The patio will be re-paved with a new layout, enabling visitors to access our dye garden independently and improving disabled access and safety. Renovation of the Bat House and new stairs to the upper storey creates better safe and secure storage for archives and other material. Air conditioning the Clore Learning Space and upgraded lighting will be more environmentally friendly with lower energy usage, saving money.

  • One of my favourite small museums.

    — Chris Riddell OBE

  • This is a small gem of a museum! Exhibitions on different artists and movements are various and always of interest, well presented and thoughtful. I also love the interpretation of the building in which the shop and cafe are housed. Staff are always friendly and well informed.

  • I just wanted to share with you the amazing benefits that coming to you has made for one of my ladies. She declined most activities and remembered very little, then you came along, wow what a difference it’s made to her life. Joining your group has helped this lady beyond words, thank you.

  • Thank you so much for all your kindness yesterday. What a fabulous place! It was so good of you to give us a tour of the Museum tour before welcoming us to the Crafternoon. Your great enthusiasm & love was the icing on the cake to complete a wonderful experience.
