The UN has stated the proportion of people needing humanitarian assistance worldwide has gone from 1 in 45 at the beginning of 2020 to 1 in 33 in 2021. IHP is helping health budgets stretch further and ensuring people can access free medicines by sourcing and supplying quality donated medicines.

Situation
The direct and indirect impacts of the COVID-19 crisis on the health of people in lower-income countries are still intensifying. The UN is projecting that for the first time since the 1990s extreme poverty is going to increase, life expectancy will fall and the annual death toll from HIV, tuberculosis and malaria is set to double. Progress made against many of the health targets laid out in the sustainable development goals is set to go into reverse if major effort is not made to prevent this.
Solution
IHP will help strengthen health services by providing access to high quality, long-dated donated essential medicines and health supplies. This saving on medicine costs, which accounts for a substantial portion of health spending in lower-income countries, will cost-effectively free up more funding for broader health programming including hand-washing campaigns, adapting existing health services to make them COVID-safe and purchasing vital medical equipment.
