Girls who live or work on the streets have faced hardships many cannot imagine, and have developed resilience to survive. Street child girls are less visible on the streets and harder to reach. We want to highlight the issues affecting all street-connected children, and support girls to thrive.

    Situation

All street children are vulnerable, but girls face specific risks. They can face child marriage and female genital mutilation, and control from others. Girls are particularly vulnerable to sexual violence and exploitation, which can cause them to leave home, as well as becoming targets for further abuse on the streets. Once on the streets, they are often harder to reach than boys and can be drawn into trafficking, prostitution and pornography as means to survive.

    Solution

A group of our network members working with street child girls in countries across Africa and Asia have raised to us the major issues girls face, and want to increase the support they offer. Together we will focus on: how to work with boyfriends and family members who prevent girls seeking help; reducing child marriage and unwanted pregnancies; and staying in education. We will also shine a light on the realities of all street children through a ‘State of the World’s Street Children' report.
