Situation

Those under 25 years are more than twice as likely to have lost their jobs as a result of the pandemic. Research also suggests that 75% of young people who fall out of work are likely to remain disengaged for the long-term. This essentially means COVID could have a generational impact on our young people & their futures. Spear Brighton not only helps disengaged young people back into work building core skills but also offers a community & supports them through their mental health challenges.

Solution

We are currently working with over 80 disadvantaged 16-24 year olds in the Brighton & Hove area. Spear is a 1-year coaching programme which challenges their mindset, builds confidence and equips them with the practical skills they need. Since the first lockdown we launched Spear Digital online and despite the challenges over 60% are already in jobs, training or further education. Our plan is to resume face to face sessions & continue to transform the lives of the young people we support.

  • Through the Spear Programme, I've landed myself a job that I'm so excited to start. Now, I’m so happy to put myself out there, be back in the world of work and to finally find myself on the route I want to be on. Thank you so much to the Spear Programme for making me realise that I can do it!

    — Shannon, now employed as a Sales Assistant in retail (Primark)

  • My life before the Spear Programme wasn’t the greatest. My mental health was in the worst state ever. I isolated from everyone. But the community we created on Spear was amazing! I honestly don't think I would be in this position right now if it weren't for the coaches and all of my fellow trainees.

    — Matthew, now working as a Bike Sales Assistant at Halfords

  • At 17 I was removed from the family home, and made homeless. I lost my safely net of having anywhere to belong.I had hit an all-time low.Just a week on Spear, I felt like I finally had somewhere I could call safe. Spear filled me with skills and confidence that I didn’t have before & changed my life

    — Chloe, now working in Tesco and doing a Level 3 Access to Higher Education course in Nursing & H

  • Before Spear, there were so many challenges I was having to face. I was in a really dark place, didn't get the grades I wanted to at school & lost all motivation and confidence. Spear taught me to have the open attitude of “I can do this”, and to realise what I want in life and how to get there.

    — Tasha, now working as a cleaner and receptionist at Freedom Leisure Centre
