It takes a village to raise a child. Our Hamara Gaon (Our Village) initiative aims to implement Pratham's core programmes at the rural level to improve children's learning levels and ensure sustainable learning through ownership over the learning needs of children in target communities.

    Situation

Of the 250 million children worldwide, who cannot read or write, two-fifths live in India. Our ASER report 2018 showed that just 44.2% of children in class five in rural Indian government schools could read a standard text for class two. This may be because First, at every grade level, basic learning levels are unacceptably low. Second, over time, learning levels seem to be “stuck”. Third, learning trajectories over time are relatively flat.

    Solution

Pratham has established social structures for providing learning support in communities to help children in primary grades "catch up" academically. By establishing a presence in the community, Pratham aims to help children not only acquire foundational skills but also help them enable to participate in a variety of ongoing learning opportunities by ensuring interactions between different community members, awareness in the community about education and improved learning outcomes.
