The greatest challenge our global community has ever faced is climate change, with deforestation of the Amazon Rainforest a significant contributor. Improving the lives of rainforest communities can protect and restore the rainforest and in turn halt the rising temperatures that threaten us all.

    Situation

Trapped in a cycle of poverty and destructive farming, many rural families in the Peruvian Amazon Rainforest have no alternative but to cut down the rainforest, as a means to feed their families and subsist. But this type of "slash and burn" crop farming isn’t sustainable - once the protective tree canopy of the rainforest is cleared, heavy rains wash away the soil’s rich nutrients on the exposed land and the ability to grow crops is limited to two years at most, driving further deforestation.

    Solution

Working with communities at the grassroots, we provide the training and resoures needed for families to transform degraded/deforested farmland into thriving “agroforestry” — an environmental friendly approach that combines native fruit and timber trees with shade crops (providing short, medium and long-term income). Our local team of experts provide hands-on training to families as well as capacity-building workshops, supporting communities with establishing sustainable farming businesses.
