Somerset has 73km of coastline made up of a huge variety of rare habitats and species. It’s special but most people don’t know. We want to connect the coast with inland habitats, protect endangered species, encourage communities to act and help children engage with our brilliant coast.

    Situation

We started surveying wildlife and habitats along Somerset’s entire coast in 2016, involving people who live and work nearby, but we need to do a lot more. To help protect rare species, we need to connect coastal and inland habitats so wildlife thrives and spreads. We need more people helping keep beaches and water clean, as well as monitoring the amazing birds, invertebrates and plants found there. And it’s essential we start young people on this same journey to protect this special place.

    Solution

Involving more people is vital. We will provide practical guidance as well as the training and tools needed so communities can act and will develop passionate coastal advocates who can make the far-reaching changes that are needed to preserve rare species and habitats that might otherwise be lost. We will work with people of all ages, backgrounds and skills to ensure Somerset’s coast is loved and protected for generations to come and its wildlife thrives helping creatures across Somerset.
